Walk to the start of the track from the city centre.
Climbing approximately 1270 metres, this is a challenging and satisfying expedition from the city to the summit of kunanyi / Mount Wellington.
The first section of the walk beside Hobart Rivulet is through largely urban surroundings. Behind Cascade Brewery the route enters bushland and climbs more steadily, following moss and fern-filled creek gullies. After Junction Cabin the track contours around the mountain to The Springs before it climbs once again, gradually at first then more steeply up the newly refurbished Zig Zag Track. Views of the summit tower draw you onward, whilst the views below provide a good excuse to stop and catch your breath! The shelter at the summit provides a great place to look down upon the city and celebrate your achievement.
NOTE: The Zig Zag track will be closed from 16 October 2023 to early 2024 for major refurbishment works. More information on alternative routes to the summit is available on the City of Hobart website here.
Due to significant fauna values and the drinking water catchment area in Wellington Park, dogs are prohibited from walking the entire length of this track.
Snowfalls can occur in Wellington Park at any time of the year so ensure you bring plenty of bring warm, waterproof clothing and sufficient water and food for the journey. Sections of this route can be slippery when covered in snow and ice. Rocks may fall from the Organ Pipes.
